Problems or challenges
The United States is facing a rapidly aging population, resulting in more seniors living with health conditions like vision impairment, heart issues, and reduced mobility. At the same time, adult children often live apart from their aging parents and struggle to stay updated on their physical and mental well-being. Without real-time insights and reliable communication tools, it becomes increasingly difficult to provide the necessary care and support.
Solution statement
We decide developing a pair of interconnected apps—one for elderly parents and one for their adult children. The parents’ app will capture health data from Apple Health and other smart devices, along with daily mental wellness insights via brief questionnaires. This information will then be automatically transmitted to the children’s app, offering a real-time view of their parents’ well-being. By enabling up-to-the-minute updates on both physical and mental health, this solution aims to help adult children stay connected, provide prompt care, and foster greater peace of mind for the entire family.
The results statements
Prototype testing confirmed that adult children were highly enthusiastic about receiving real-time updates, finding peace of mind in the app’s features. However, seniors overwhelmingly perceived it as overbearing, often voicing concerns about feeling “nannied.” In light of this feedback, the team decided to halt further development.
This experience illustrates the critical value of testing ideas with real users at an early stage — helping avoid substantial investments in a solution that might not truly resonate with all stakeholders.
